Alexandru Ioan CUZA (or Alexandru Ioan I; n. March 20, 1820, Huşi, Moldova, today in Romania - d. May 15, 1873, Heidelberg, Germany) was the first ruler of the United Principalities of Moldova and Wallachia, as well as of the national state. Romania. Cuza participated actively in the revolutionary movement from 1848 in Moldova and in the struggle for the unification of the Principalities.
